Prometheus Unbound, A Tragedy by George Augustus Simcox. A verse drama that reimagines the Prometheus myth within a late-Victorian dramatic frame. The play unfolds among gods, Titans, and mortal heroes as Prometheus endures punishment on Kaukasos while steadfastly refusing to yield to Zeus. Through an extensive chorus and a cast including Thetis, Hermes, Herakles, Peleus, and Cheiron, the poem meditates on questions of freedom, justice, and the uses and limits of power. Simcox intertwines philosophical debate with epic tableaux: Prometheus speaks of knowledge, the burdens of foreknowledge, and the paradox of mercy; the Chorus laments tyranny and complacency; and the heroes seek a path toward deliverance that may redeem both gods and men. The work culminates in a visionary sequence in which prophecy, Nemesis, and the coming ages reshape the relation of ruler and ruled. A ambitious, dense meditation on liberty, wisdom, and the price of resistance.
