Letter On Colonization by James Gillespie Birney. In this 1834 abolitionist tract, Birney—a Kentucky-born lawyer and former slaveholder who became a leading critic of colonization—offers a sweeping critique of the American Colonization Society. Framed as a letter to Rev. Thornton J. Mills, the text recounts Birney’s Southern experiences as an agent, surveys the practical effects of colonization on whites, free people of color, and Africa, and argues that emancipation and abolition cannot be achieved by expatriation.
