A Calm Inquiry Into The Scripture Doctrine Concerning The Person Of Christ; To Which Are Annexed A Brief Review Of The Controversy Between Bishop Horsley And Dr. Priestley And A Summary Of The Various Opinions Entertained By Christians Upon This Subject, by Thomas Belsham, surveys the major debates over the person of Jesus Christ from a Unitarian perspective. The work is divided into two parts. The first part critically examines New Testament texts that supporters of Christ's pre-existence and divinity have used, offering Unitarian readings that emphasize Jesus as a genuine human being with a divine commission rather than a divine hypostasis. The second part provides a systematic overview of the diverse Christian opinions about Christ—Unitarians, Arians, Semi-Arians, High Arians, Sabellians, Swedenborgians, Tritheists, and Trinitarians—presenting arguments for and against each view, and discussing textual variations and translations. An appendix recounts the Horsley–Priestley controversy on the existence of orthodox Hebrew Christians at Elia. Belsham advocates impartial, evidence-based textual interpretation and promotes liberal discussion on contested points.
