Principles Of Geology by Charles Lyell. This major treatise offers a methodical, evidence-based account of the earth’s history, arguing that the laws governing present geologic processes also governed past changes. Lyell rejects catastrophist doctrines and emphasizes gradual, observable operations—erosion, sedimentation, volcanism, transport of fossils—by which he reconstructs the sequence of formations and the distribution of life. In Book IV he clarifies the methodological foundations of geology and distinguishes sedimentary from volcanic rocks, and primary (or primitive) from transition and tertiary formations. He introduces a fourfold classification of the European tertiary rocks—the Eocene, Miocene, Older Pliocene, and Newer Pliocene—and shows how living shells (testacea) and other fossils anchor these divisions. Sicily’s Val di Noto provides a vivid case study of Newer Pliocene strata, with submarine lavas, peperinos, and dikes. Across Asia, Europe, and the Atlantic, Lyell demonstrates how continents grow, subsist, and intersect through time, and how comparative paleontology yields a global chronology.
