Select Sermons. Translated,. By Rutton Morris by Jean Baptiste Massillon is a late-traditional Catholic pulpit collection. It presents a sequence of sermons addressing the sovereignty of Christ through the cross, the true happiness of the righteous, the danger of lukewarm faith, and the primacy of prayer. Massillon, using scriptural citations and patristic authorities, portrays Jesus as both crucified King and universal ruler, with God the Father entrusted with mercy and judgment. He contrasts the righteous’s virtue with worldly prosperity, and identifies two consolations—revelation’s truth and grace’s love. Lukewarmness is shown as perilous, with causes such as neglect of prayer, worldliness, and self-security; true Christian love is defined by humility, timid faith, and active charity. Prayer is presented as a universal duty, modeled by the Canaanitish woman, and meant to be simple, heartfelt, and persistent. The later sections (Sermons XII–XIV) treat death, the afterlife, and the final judgment, urging repentance and steadfast pursuit of holiness.
