The Complete Works In Verse And Prose Of George Herbert by Alexander Balloch Grosart. This 1874 privately circulated volume assembles George Herbert's complete verse and prose, with Walton's Life of Herbert (1670), appendices, notes, illustrations, and translations. Grosart preserves the original texts of Herbert's writings and Walton's Life, reprinting the Latin and English letters and poems, and adding translations and critical notes for the first time in full. The edition brings together The Life of George Herbert by Izaak Walton (1670) with Appendices A–D, including Walton’s other notices of Herbert, and the Letters of Donne and Ferrar, alongside Herbert’s major prose works such as A Priest to the Temple (1652), Country Parson, Jacula Prudentum, and the Latin Orations. It aims to restore the texts to their early editions, correct editorial emendations, and provide a scholarly, annotated collection for readers and researchers of Herbert’s works and 17th-century English devotion and literature.
