A Dissertation On The Course And Probable Termination Of The Niger by Rufane Shaw Donkin. This historical-geographical treatise investigates the fate of Central Africa’s great river, arguing that ancient writers used Nile or Niger as generic terms for large rivers rather than for a single fixed channel. Drawing on Herodotus, Ptolemy, Pliny, and later explorers such as Park, Denham, and Clapperton, Donkin attempts to reconcile conflicting accounts of the Geir and Ni-Geir, restore original orthography, and redraw the map of Africa to reflect a continuous central range that generates its rivers. He contends that the Niger rises in Mauritania and, taking its eastern course, ultimately connects with the Nile of Bornou and perhaps reaches the Mediterranean rather than ending in inland desert basins. The volume includes maps, critical apparatus on D’Anville and Rennell, and discussions of the Wangara marshes, Lake Chad, Ulil salt mines, and the Congo’s relationship to the Niger.
