On Chronic Alcoholic Intoxication: With An Inquiry Into The Influence Of The Abuse Of Alcohol As A Predisposing Cause Of Disease by William Marcet. This nineteenth-century medical treatise surveys the health hazards of alcohol, focusing on chronic alcoholic intoxication rather than episodic drunkenness. Marcet defines chronic alcoholism as a protracted nervous-system illness arising from long-continued use of spirituous stimulants, and distinguishes it from delirium tremens. The work traces predisposing factors (quantity and quality of drink, age, sex, temperament, occupation, diet) and immediate precipitants, including exceptional excess and coexisting diseases. It surveys the physiological actions of alcohol, both local (stomach and nerves) and systemic (heart, lungs, brain), and discusses death from acute poisoning. A central feature is the therapeutic use of oxide of zinc, its pharmacology, dosage, and effects on insomnia, tremor, hallucinations, and weakness, illustrated by forty-eight Westminster Hospital cases. The book also includes a separate inquiry into how alcohol predisposes disease in occupational groups, with tables of sobers and drinkers by occupation, contributing to early social-epidemiological perspectives.
