De L'intelligence by Hippolyte Taine. The work outlines a systematic psychology of intelligence, tracing how knowledge arises from simple experiences transformed by signs, images, and sensations. In the first part, Taine shows signs as the ordinary means by which we replace experiences we cannot directly observe, with words and abstractions, and how language grows from early tendencies in children. In the second part, he develops the idea of the image as a persistent retransmission of sensation and explains how illusions and rectifications shape belief, memory, and prediction. The third part analyzes the senses, arguing that color, sound, odor, taste, and touch are built from a few elemental sensations whose combinations account for perception. The fourth part relates these processes to brain anatomy, claiming that the cortex, brain stems, and spinal centers form a hierarchy that generates and refines mental states. Taine’s method fuses psychology and physiology to ground epistemology in natural science.
