The Craftsman by Caleb D’Anvers is a late 17th- to early 18th-century British political pamphlet series that appeared in the early 1730s. This collection of newsletters, satirical essays, letters, and dialogues targets corruption, bribery, and the abuse of power in government, Parliament, and financial institutions such as the South-Sea Company. Writing under a persona and in a brisk ironic voice, D’Anvers critiques the motives of ministers, secretaries of state, and stockjobbers, and defends liberty, constitutional checks, and fiscal probity. The pieces mingle polemical arguments with allegory (a Vampyre tale of public corruption; masquerade critiques) and historical comparisons to Pericles, monarchic intrigues, and the French Parliament. During a period of public scandal—the South Sea Bubble, the Pragmatic Sanction, and shifting European alliances—the author argues for transparency, accountability, and restraint on standing armies, taxation, and power. The writings are both a historical document and a spirited call for prudent governance, civic virtue, and reform.
