A Scriptural Commentary On The First Epistle General Of Peter: With An Appendix, Concerning The Profitable Reading Of Scripture by Joseph Esmond Riddle is a devotional, verse-by-verse exegesis of 1 Peter. The author, a Church of England clergyman and the curate of All-Souls, Mary-le-Bone, presents a plan in which Scripture itself is the best interpreter. The volume selects meaningful parallels from other Scriptures, expands on the text with supplementary thoughts, and employs quotations to illuminate themes such as election, salvation, sanctification, holy living, and suffering for righteousness. It also notes coincidences between Peter’s language and his own experiences, and includes numerous cross-references to illustrate how the Bible speaks with one voice. An Appendix on the profitable reading of Scripture argues for a heart prepared by reverence, humility, candour, and self-application, and for prayerful reliance on the Holy Spirit to illuminate understanding. The work was published in London in 1834 (John Murray).
