Earth As A Topical Application In Surgery by Addinell Hewson. This monograph records Hewson's investigations into using earth and dried clay as topical dressings in surgical wards at the Pennsylvania Hospital during 1869–1870. It presents detailed case histories (including early cases and those following), systematic observations, and experimental demonstrations of earth's deodorizing, disinfecting, anti-inflammatory, and healing effects. The work also discusses Hewson's dressing techniques (such as Scultetus gauze coverings and collodion-supported dressings) and the use of atropia for pain relief, and situates these dressings within the broader advances in antisepsis and inflammation theory of the era. Four illustrations, produced by Walter Woodbury’s photographic relief process, illustrate the dressings and their applications. Hewson argues that dried yellow subsoil clay, when properly applied and kept dry, can reduce fetor, suppress putrefaction, lessen pain, and accelerate healing through chemical interactions involving oxygen and ammonia, supported by contemporary chemical authorities such as Liebig and Way.
