Synopsis

"Shooting The Rapids" by Alexander Innes Shand. A Victorian melodrama of wealth, gambling, and social reputation, the tale centers on Ralph Dacre, a young, aristocratic gambler whose deceit and financial ruin threaten his sister Alice and her fiancé Philip Bourke. Across a panorama of English country houses and continental capitals, the novel traces the corrosive effects of wealth, public virtue versus private vice, and the possibility of redemption through restitution and action. Hardcastle, an ex-officer turned ally, pursues Ralph to shield Alice from ruin, while Asgill and other financiers press Ralph toward dangerous schemes. The discovery of the Scala Fell mine adds a future fortune that intensifies moral calculations about truth, confession, and loyalty. The chase carries them from London clubs in 1849 to Rome’s siege, Baden, Naples, and Monte Rotondo, where Ralph's reckless venture ends in death and reconciliation with his sister. An epilogue leaves wealth and loyalty guiding new lives for Alice and Philip, with forgiveness and the cost of deceit at the heart of the story.
