A Letter Addressed To. R.W. Jelf. In Explanation Of Tract No. 90, In The Series Called The Tracts For The Times, By The Author J.H. Newman — John Henry Newman. This 1841 polemical letter explains Tract No. 90 and responds to a protest by four tutors. Newman argues that the Thirty Nine Articles condemn not only certain practices but the authoritative teaching of Rome as it is now taught, and he distinguishes the decrees of Trent from the received creed of the Roman authorities. He contends that Romanism or Popery has shifted focus toward Marian devotion, purgatory, indulgences, and invocation of saints, which he regards as unscriptural or idolatrous. He defends the liberty of interpreting the Articles, allowing diverse but not contradictory opinions, in order to prevent schism and to keep Anglicans from joining Rome. The letter places the tract in a broader movement toward a deeper Catholic spirit within Anglican tradition, citing earlier Anglican authorities to illustrate the range of opinion. It closes with a sorrowful note for any offense caused and a plea for unity rather than division.
