Synopsis

The Consolation Of The Devout Soul. With An Appendix On The Holy Fear Of God. Tr. By Georgiana, Lady Chatterton by Joseph Frassinetti. Joseph Frassinetti's The Consolation Of The Devout Soul is a compact Catholic manual on Christian sanctity. Frassinetti argues that sanctity consists in charity and the faithful observance of God's Will through the commandments and Church precepts; he distinguishes simple sanctity (sanctifying grace) from Christian perfection (the complete union of the will with God's). The work reassures readers that Christian perfection is not overly difficult: it can be attained by avoiding mortal sins, avoiding consciously committing venial sins, and seeking what is pleasing to God in indifferent matters; with the help of grace, a devout person can grow in holiness. The book also covers obstacles, the beauty and usefulness of perfection, and the means to attain it, including prayer, a spiritual director, obedience, and self-denial. An Appendix on the Holy Fear Of God explains that fear should be tranquil and confident, not disabling, and offers guidance on maintaining peace while pursuing holiness. The translator Georgiana, Lady Chatterton, and the Preface by the author frame the English edition, which dates from the 1870s (sixth edition base) and bears the 1876 original.
