Synopsis
Second Strings by Alfred Denis Godley is a satirical poetry collection that lampoons the English university world at the turn of the century. The book alternates between affectionate satire and sharp indictment, praising athletic prowess in Blues and Soccer while lampooning the obsession with curricula, exams, and reputations. Many pieces were originally published in periodicals including the Oxford Magazine, the Spectator, and the Cornhill Magazine, with the author thanking publishers for permission to republish.
