Steps To Sense Verses; Or, A Set Of Exercises, To Be Rendered Into Latin Hexameters And Pentameters is a nineteenth-century educational manual for teaching Latin verse composition in schools. The work advocates a practical method: after students learn prosody and the mechanics of forming verses, they translate selected passages from Roman poets into plain English to observe wording and metre, then retranslate into Latin in the same metre. Aimed at tutors and pupils, the book provides a sequence of progressively challenging examples drawn from canonical authors to guide versification. It also notes that a tutor's key is available to publishers gratis for classroom use. The volume includes references to related works such as Enchiridion Lyricum, and explains editorial conventions (for example bracketed words not to be rendered in Latin).
