This work presents an eighteenth?century foundational examination of how the human mind acquires, forms, and communicates knowledge, with emphasis on organizing thought clearly. It posits that knowledge grows from four mental operations—perception (simple apprehension), judgment, reasoning, and disposition (composition/organization)—and that perception stems from external sensation and reflection on mental acts. Complex ideas arise from combining simple ideas, by abstraction and relations, while substances are construed as substrata supporting properties, and minds are distinguished from bodies, with spiritual beings possibly differing in kind from material things. The tract explores infinity, space, and time as conceptions conceived by the mind though actual ideas remain finite, and describes the formation of general notions through abstraction. Language and signs are analyzed as carriers of ideas, with definitions serving to connect words to ideas, though many so?called definitions may merely trigger recall. This Part I of a four?part volume aims to discipline thought for clearer understanding, laying groundwork for later chapters on perception, substances, abstraction, general ideas, relations, and language. The broader text also surveys political philosophy, education, and public virtue, arguing that wise administration, virtue, and a balanced constitution sustain liberty.
