Synopsis
M.P.: Or The Blue-Stocking, A Comic Opera, In Three Acts by Thomas Moore. M.P.: Or The Blue-Stocking, A Comic Opera, In Three Acts is a satirical comic opera that lampoons politics, literary culture, and social pretensions in early 19th-century England. The work follows a lively cast around the English theatre world: Sir Charles Canvas, Captain Canvas, Henry De Rosier, Miss Hartington, Miss Selwyn, Lady Bab Blue the titular Blue-Stocking, and the crafty bookseller Leatherhead, among others. A contested inheritance drives much of the intrigue, punctuated by romantic pairings and comic misunderstandings. Sir Charles canvasses influence and rank while scheming to promote himself, but the young émigré De Rosier and his allies resist manipulation. Miss Hartington loves De Rosier, while Miss Selwyn favors Captain Canvas; in the finale, rightful heirs are revealed, lovers are united, and satire cements moral resolutions against vanity and bribery. The Preface explains Moore’s affection for the Music and theatre, and acknowledges contributors to the production.
