Essai Sur Les Hallucinations by Alexandre Bottex. This 1838 medical discourse, delivered before the Administration of the Hospice de L’Antiquaille in Lyon, examines the nature and variety of hallucinations in mental illness. Bottex argues that hallucinations arise from irritation or dysfunction of the brain and nervous system rather than supernatural causes, and that the brain acts as the central organ linking all bodily functions. He distinguishes hallucinations from delusions, noting that some patients experience vivid perceptions without losing reason, while others become dangerous when misperceived as real. Drawing on clinical observations from his hospice and on authorities such as Esquirol and Pinel, the author surveys visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and visceral hallucinations, their mechanisms, and their implications for prognosis and treatment. He concludes that these phenomena reflect cerebral pathology and that recognizing their neurological basis can improve diagnosis and care, while rejecting supernatural explanations.
