Synopsis
On The Roman Catholic Question by Sir Robert Harry Inglis. The two speeches compiled in this volume were delivered in the House of Commons—May 10, 1825 and May 9, 1828—arguing against Catholic Emancipation and defending the Protestant constitution. Inglis contends that the Church of Rome remains unchangeable in its character and in its influence over conscience and intellect, citing the Index Librorum Prohibitorum and various prohibitions on literature and science as evidence. He critiques the idea that emancipation would bring peace, warning that concessions would invite further demands and threaten Protestant rights and institutions. The book includes the Preface, the two main speeches, and extensive Appendix materials detailing parliamentary debates, historical treaties (notably the Treaty of Limerick), and examples from continental Catholic states to illustrate the supposed dangers of papal authority. The work thus presents a historical-political case against ecclesiastical power guiding civil policy in Britain and Ireland.
