La Vénus De Milo by Félix Ravaisson. La careful, objective analysis of the famous statue discovered on Melos and then housed in the Louvre, this work investigates the original composition and its later treatment. Ravaisson describes how the statue was formed from two blocks joined by metal tenons that fractured under humidity and time, and how plaster, joins, and cales were used in later restorations that altered its balance and appearance. He weighs the testimony of contemporary scholars such as M. de Clarac and Quatremère de Quincy and surveys various theories about a possible second figure (Mars) in the original group. Rather than endorsing further restoration, he advocates restituting the thought of the original ensemble to restore harmony without modifying the marble itself. Framing the Venus within Greek conceptions of marriage, victory through persuasion, and noble dignity, the essay situates the statue as a paradigm of balance, grace, and the struggle between material constraint and ideal form.
