Synopsis
The Dutchman's Fireside: A Tale by James Kirke Paulding. The novel blends satire, romance, and frontier adventure in early New York. Catalina Vancour arrives for a winter visit in a world of New-York society dominated by the governor's circle and his aides, while two rival suitors—Colonel Barry Gilfillan (Irish) and Sir Thicknesse Throgmorton (English)—court her with varied pretensions. Sybrandt Westbrook, a country gentleman turned soldier, returns from Albany and becomes entangled in the affections and social intrigues. The plot features a stolen portrait, jealousy, reconciliations, and a complicated bequest that tests fidelity, pride, and love.
