This volume presents a curated edition of primary-source documents—letters and official papers—extracted from the Cotton library and other national repositories, recounting the suppression of monasteries in England during the 1530s under Henry VIII and the Cromwell regime. Edited from originals, the collection includes correspondence of leading figures such as Cromwell, Legh, Layton, Latimer, and other state agents, and documents the process of visitation, suppression acts, confiscation of property, and the political and religious motives behind the Dissolution. It features prefatory remarks explaining dating difficulties in the sources, a table of contents listing the letter-chronology from 1526 to 1539/40, and extensive notes on the fate of abbeys, priories, and nunneries across England and Wales. The Camden Society edition (1843) aims to illuminate the Reformation’s social, economic, and legal impacts and the experiences of religious houses under royal authority.
