A Dissertation On The Inoculated Small-Pox: Or, An Attempt Towards An Investigation Of The Real Causes Which Render The Small-Pox By Inoculation, So Much More Mild And Safe, Than The Same Disease When Produced By The Ordinary Means Of Infection. By John Mudge. The work presents a systematic examination of why inoculated small-pox tends to be milder than its natural form. John Mudge argues that the difference cannot be attributed to a single factor, but to a combination of four influential circumstances: the patient’s habitual constitution at the time of infection; the amount of variolous matter present; the mode of infection; and the surrounding air or external conditions.
