Synopsis
A Syllabus Of A Course Of Lectures On Chemistry by Humphry Davy. This work provides a structured introduction to chemical science, presenting a planned sequence of lectures delivered at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Part I surveys the chemistry of ponderable substances, detailing the chemical powers, the distinctions between undecomposed simple principles and compounds, and the organization of binary and more complex compounds into classes such as oxides, acids, earths, metals, and saline salts. It foregrounds the corpuscular theory as the explanatory framework, explains synthesis and analysis, and describes the laboratory instruments central to experiment. Part II treats the chemistry of imponderable substances—heat (caloric), light, electrical influence, and galvanism—and considers their roles in nature, meteorology, and physiology. Part III extends to the chemistry of the arts, including agriculture, tanning, bleaching, dyeing, metallurgy, the manufacture of glass and porcelain, and the preparation of food and drink. Across its parts, the syllabus aims to teach general chemical principles, observable phenomena, and practical applications, reflecting early 19th-century efforts to combine theory with hands-on experimentation.
