Elements Of Rhetoric: Comprising An Analysis Of The Laws Of Moral Evidence And Of Persuasion by Richard Whately is a systematic 19th?century treatise that redefines rhetoric as an offshoot of logic. It surveys definitions, history, and the utility of rules for composition, and outlines four parts: the address to the understanding (conviction), the address to the will (persuasion), style, and elocution. Whately distinguishes conviction from persuasion, explains various kinds of arguments (a priori, signs, examples), and discusses the arrangement of propositions and arguments for different purposes. He emphasizes perspicuity, energy, and elegance in style, and argues for a natural, unforced delivery as superior to rote or theatrical elocution. The work includes an Appendix with extracts from classical and modern authors to illustrate rhetorical principles, and discusses audience adaptation, clear argumentation, and the avoidance of fallacies while engaging Christian evidences. It remains a foundational text for classical rhetoric and its relation to logic, evidence, and persuasion.
