Synopsis

The Words Of The Lord Jesus by Rudolf Stier is a dense, scholarly exegesis that presents a harmony-focused reading of Luke’s itinerant ministry, with cross?references to Mark and extensive engagement with Matthew as well. It advances a methodological defense of Mark’s compact, vivid scenes and treats Luke’s chronology and Nazareth readings as central to understanding Jesus’ mission. The study surveys key Luke pericopes—calling of the disciples (Luke 5); the widow of Nain (Luke 7:13–14); the Sinner and Simon (Luke 7:40–50); the rebuke of zeal (Luke 9:55–56); the call to follow (Luke 9:57–62); the Seventy and their mission (Luke 10:2–16); the Seventy’s return (Luke 10:17–24); the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37); Martha and Mary (Luke 10:41–42); and the Lord’s prayer (Luke 11:2–13). Core themes include mercy and forgiveness, humility as true greatness, the Kingdom expanding beyond Israel, and the balance of prayer, contemplation, and service. The book probes the relationship between inner faith and outward action, the use of miracles, and the inaugurated Spirit-led life in the Kingdom.
