This nineteenth-century American botany manual is an encyclopedia-style reference designed for students and teachers in higher education. It offers a comprehensive taxonomy that runs from broad classes and orders to genera and many species, incorporating exotic and native flora, cryptogams, and major trees. Diagnostic morphology—perianth parts, stamens, pistils, fruit types, seed arrangements, leaf form, and inflorescences—serves as the organizing principle. The work includes numerous genus exemplars (Acer, Achillea, Adiantum, Amaranthus, Quercus, Pinus, Rosa, Rubus, Helianthus, among others) and an alphabetized SPECIES OF PLANTS section with distribution notes (Exotic, Native, Southern). Practical features include an extensive glossary, a dedicated analysis method for teaching (the descending method from higher classes), plates, herbarium practice, and an introduction to Linnaean classification (21 artificial classes and their orders).
