Synopsis

Pathological Observations On The Rotated Or Contorted Spine, Commonly Called Lateral Curvature by Andrew Dods. This 1824 medical treatise argues that lateral spinal deformities are not simply a single disease but arise from a rotation of the spine produced by muscular contraction of the back muscles, initiated by mal-position during childhood, including fashionable postures and the use of restraints. Dods differentiates contorted spine (rotation) from curved spine (gibbous), and contends that structural disease of the vertebrae is not necessary for deformity; rotation of vertebrae, ribs, and scapulae explains observed chest and shoulder asymmetries. He critiques prevalent prevention methods—education chairs, stays, neck collars, back-boards, reclining beds, and carrying weights on the head—as harmfully reinforcing muscle contraction. The book advocates a program of friction, manipulation, elastic resting couches, carefully graded exercises, and alternating postures to relax the muscles and restore natural spinal motion, while denying the efficacy of extended postures. It calls for reform in medical thinking and in child-rearing practices to prevent spinal distortion in the next generation.
