This is a scholarly edition (1720) translated into English with explanatory notes and excerpts from Lyndwood, Spelman, Athone, and Somner, presenting a monumental canon-law corpus on the governance, discipline, and worship of the English church. It compiles Anglo-Saxon and early Norman canons, penitentials, and legatine material, with extensive marginal notes, glosses, and textual variant discussions. Core topics include church immunities, church lands, and protections; church–state relations; taxation, tithes, and sanctuary; ecclesiastical governance in Canterbury and York; penalties, excommunication, and oaths; crimes and clerical discipline; and debates about papal authority versus English independence. The edition includes Addenda, a substantial index, printer material, and editor’s commentary meant to illuminate transmission, authenticity, and reform. The work stands as a crucial source for scholars of medieval English ecclesiastical law.
