This volume presents an integrated course that blends general anatomy, descriptive analysis of muscles, cellular membranes, integuments, and the physiology underlying muscular action and movement. Cooper distinguishes physical properties of muscles from vital properties, discusses contractility, irritability, and the mechanism of contraction, and explains levers, tendinous attachments, and the role of the cellular membrane and vascular and nervous supply in muscular function. The work proceeds in a rigorous, lecture-style format, with extensive chapters on the General Anatomy of Muscles, the Descriptive Anatomy of Muscles, and practical remarks on dissection, wounds, and hernia. It covers the muscles of the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, and both upper and lower limbs, including the diaphragm, intercostals, hip, knee, ankle, and intrinsic foot muscles, and ends with a detailed examination of the perineum and pelvic floor.
