Synopsis
A Week By Themselves by Emilia Marryat Norris is a Victorian children's tale of misadventure and moral growth. The story follows three brothers—Alfred, Charlie, and Tom—who plan to become Robinson Crusoes, living in the old boat-house by a lake and provisioning themselves for a simulated island. Their parents permit a week of self-reliance, and the boys strap on their oldest clothes, pack kettles, frying-pans, a donkey, and a Bible, and begin their Crusoe week. The narrative chronicles their hopeful preparations and energetic efforts to build a cave, light a fire, catch fish, bake pudding, and boil water, often ending in comic failures and hard work. When quarrels erupt they experience rough days, including a dangerous night when Tom nearly drowns, which awakens their brotherly loyalty. The tale emphasizes perseverance, teamwork, prayer, and forgiveness, and concludes with a renewed sense of family unity and moral reflection. Originally published in 1865; illustrated by C. A. Edwards, it appeared in Griffith and Farran's juvenile library.
