Synopsis
The Voice Of Conscience by Mrs. Quintin Kennedy is a narrative founded on fact. It follows John Trevanion, a Cornwall-born miner’s son, from childhood through adulthood as he navigates poverty, education, and faith. After Agnes’s death, he experiences a long, agonizing descent into doubt, despair, and self-destruction—drifting through Dublin and Cork, sinking into solitary penury, gambling, and remorse. The book records his agonies, the memory of loved ones, and his eventual awakening through patient religious counsel, especially from Wesley and a compassionate parish priest. It ends with a plea for repentance and trust in divine mercy, a stark meditation on conscience, salvation, and the power of faith to redeem a fallen life.
