Synopsis
A Discourse by John Mason Duncan. This 1841 sermon, delivered on the national fast day in Baltimore, argues that civil government should rest on the covenant with Jehovah and the mediatorial rule of Christ, not on faction or political expediency. Duncan contends that Christian nations are defined not by sect but by obedience to divine laws, and he laments the injurious influence of party strife, licentiousness, and Mammon upon public life. The discourse calls ministers to be ambassadors of the gospel, urging them to exercise ministerial liberty within the bounds of faith and church order, and to model unity, charity, and moral courage. Drawing on Scripture—from the covenant with Israel to Paul’s teachings—it develops a framework whereby religion shapes politics, and politics must reflect righteousness. It also exhorts the church to reform public life through sanctified leadership, prayer, and a renewed sense of national responsibility. This work contributes to 19th-century religious political theology and debates about church-state relations.
