Synopsis
Teuton: A Poem by Christopher James Riethmüller. This long narrative poem unfolds the life of Teuton, the North-King's son, charting his childhood, education, and leadership as he strikes a balance between ancient lore, Christian faith, and modern enlightenment. Beginning in a Northern fortress and garden, the poem moves through Teuton's upbringing beside his sister Christabel, his schooling in ancient languages and philosophy, and his encounters with esoteric sciences and alchemy. As tensions between hereditary authority and reformers mount, Teuton confronts opponents who claim to guard sacred truth, leading to flight from the castle and the founding of a new city built on conscience, liberty, and learning. The work features a central 'Masque of Liberty' where an Aurora-like figure urges societal reform, and a companion 'Fair Pilgrim' who reconciles faith with civic life. In the final sections, Teuton envisions a future where freedom, religion, science, and justice cohere in a prosperous, humane state.
