The Apiarian's Guide: Containing Directions For The Management Of Bees Upon The Depriving System by J. H. Payne. This practical manual presents the Depriving System of beekeeping and offers detailed guidance for establishing and managing apiaries. It covers choosing a site for an apiary, constructing and placing hives, and maintaining equipment; selecting and introducing bees; and handling honey harvests without destroying the colonies. The work describes the improved Cottage Hive and a box-for harvesting honey, methods for placing swarms, uniting weak stocks and swarms, and preventing robbery. It also addresses feeding weak colonies, protecting hives from pests and thieves, and dislodging bees from trees or buildings to rehome them. Payne also discusses Nutt’s newly invented hive and other practical remarks derived from nearly forty years of apiary observation, and emphasizes the economic value of beekeeping for rural cottage economies.
