Synopsis

What Can She Do? by Edward Payson Roe. This 1876 novel follows Edith Allen, her sisters Zell and Laura, and their mother as wealth collapses and New York society gives way to poverty and daily struggle. In a city world of luxury, indulgence, and unscrupulous men, Edith faces moral choices about work, marriage, and independence, while Zell seeks escape through romance and Van Dam, and Laura drifts into apathy. The narrative juxtaposes the moral temptations of Wall Street and fashionable circles with the virtues of honest labor, friendship, and faith. Through the help of Arden Lacey, the Scots Malcom and Rose, and Mrs. Hart, Edith discovers a personal Saviour and rebuilds a life rooted in work, family, and community. The story climaxes in Edith’s steadfast refusal to compromise her integrity, her eventual marriage to Arden, and a hopeful, morally renewed circle formed by work, care, and faith.
