Synopsis
Merried Off. by Henry Bergh is a satirical Newport sketch in verse that lampoons the marriage-market and social pretensions of mid-19th-century American society. The poem follows Hannibal Goit, a man of low birth who becomes father to three daughters—Tulip, Lilly, and Rose—under the pressure of a status-seeking mother, Mistress Goit. Set against Newport seasons, the work ridicules mothers who trade love for wealth, titles, and fashionable alliances. Through a chorus of mock-heroic couplets, the narrator traces the daughters' prospects as various suitors—a Count, a Baron, and others—arrange weddings to secure fortune rather than affection. The satire extends to the commodification of romance, the fragility of social rank, and the rituals of fashion—trousseaus, balls, duels, and the infamous Hymen's Exchange. As the season unfolds, fortune wanes: Lilly is cherished but doomed to consumption; the Baron's schemes collapse, and the Count departs. The piece closes with a moral: true virtue endures beyond fashion's whims, and the consequences of mercenary marriage are laid bare.
