Synopsis
Evanus by Augustine David Crake. Evanus is a historical Christian romance tracing the life of a Caledonian youth who is torn from his homeland during the late Roman period and drawn into the world of Roman Britain and Rome. The narrative follows Eachan, son of a Celt chieftain, who saves a Roman captive and is later enslaved, purged by the Druids, and forced into gladiatorial combat. Through a sequence of trials—from capture in Caledonia to service in a Roman villa, and then the arena—Evanus endures brutality, loyalty to his mother, and a longing for liberty. His courage in the arena earns him freedom, but also embroils him in political intrigues surrounding Constantine and Maxentius. A vision of a cross signals a turning point as conspirators threaten the young hero; ultimately he flees to Italy, where he is reconciled with his mother Lucia (Aithne) and receives baptism, becoming Evanus. The tale interweaves themes of faith, vengeance, mercy, and the Christianizing of aRoman world under Constantine’s rising influence.
