Synopsis
The Joy Of Captain Ribot by Armando Palacio Valdés is a novel of manners set in Valencia and told in the voice of a seafaring captain who becomes passionately entangled with Dona Cristina, the wife of Emilio Marti. The story follows his early savoring of pure, almost idealized affection, the complications of a marriage-bound love, and the social codes of a provincial, aristocratic circle that includes Cristina’s mother Dona Amparo, her cousin Isabelita, and the family’s shrewd relatives Sabas and Castell. As Ribot’s feelings deepen, he must balance desire with duty, friendship with betrayal, and the narrator’s own conscience. A dramatic series of events—Cristina’s loyalty, Castell’s pressing ambitions, the ruin and illness of Emilio, and Ribot’s generous acts toward Cristina and her daughter—test the limits of honor and affection. In the end, Ribot secures a future for Cristina’s child and finds a tempered happiness in his memory of Cristina, living with dignity and quiet hope.
