John and I love writing and updating "Fundraising for Dummies" because we have a great sense of purpose about this book: It's very much needed! In the three editions we've done so far, we've been able to provide simple, clear how-tos (and lots of examples from experience) that show people how to gather and grow support for issues they care very much about. It's a hopeful work! The idea for the book came about in a conversation with a number of fundraisers for small organizations; I thought, "Wow, if we had some kind of toolkit that covered all the basics, fundraising wouldn't be so overwhelming for people who have to figure it all out themselves." So I approached Wiley, they liked the idea (thank goodness), and John and I started working on the first outline. That was more than 10 years ago!

In its current version, which was released in March 2010, John and I completely updated the book to include fundraising ideas for a tumultuous economy--how can you keep your fundraising strong when times are tight? We've also updated for the web-based communications, as well as the huge social media waves that are sweeping the world--what a great opportunity for getting your message heard by the masses!
