This book consists primarily of essays and case studiesexplaining and demonstrating the state-of-the-art in CAD/CAMapplications for buildings. It aims to highlight critical questionsand assumptions underlying the use of computers in the design andproduction of buildings as well as provide practical advice topractitioners interested in realising such projects.

  • Includes case studies to demonstrate how CAD/ CAM applicationshave been used in completed buildings
  • A â??resource and referenceâ?? section at the back ofthe book provides additional information and expertise

From the Back Cover:

The first few years of the 21stcentury have seen arevolution in the ways that we think about designing and makingbuildings. In no other area is this more apparent than in theinterface of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aidedmanufacture (CAM). The potential blurring or assimilation of thesetwo systems holds the still allusive but golden promise of adirect, smooth transference of design data into large-scaleproduction facilities in which components are directly cut, modelled and moulded. How far off are we from seeing the widespreadadoption of this technology? What is the potential for CAD/CAMbeyond tailor-made forms? In the future, what is the possibility ofcomplex, large-scale modelling being run out in mass-customisedbuildings?

Blurring the Lines draws together the expertise of botharchitects and engineers who are working at the fore in this field, with contributions from Mark Burry, Lars Hesselgren, Kristina Sheaand ShoP Architects. In addition to essays on key topics, coveringthe intersection of CAD-CAM techniques, case studies are featuredthat bring into focus these pioneering technologies. These includeamong others: Gehry’s D2 Bank Conference Hall; NoxArchitects’ Son-O-House; Piano’s Paul Klee Museum; Cookand Fournier’s Kunsthaus Graz; and Massie’s DigitalHousings.
