This book is an archival reference for the evolving field ofbiomaterials and their applications in society, focusing on theircomposition, properties, characterization, chemistry andapplications in bioenergy, chemicals, and novel materials andbiomaterials.  It has broad appeal due to the recentheightened awareness around bioenergy and biomass as potentialreplacements for petroleum feedstocks.  The book isdivided into three parts: cellulose-based biomaterials, chitin andchitosan biomaterials, and hemicelluloses and otherpolysaccharides.  Each chapter addresses a separatebiomaterial, discussing its chemical, physical, and biologicalattributes, and hones in on each compound's intrinsictunability for numerous chemicaltransformations.  In the current quest for a "green"economy and resources, this book will help inspire scientiststowards novel sources for chemicals, materials, and energy in the years to come.

From the Back Cover:

Provides the foundation needed to develop renewable biofuels andbiomaterials

Polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitin, and starch are amongthe most abundant biomaterials on our planet. Due to their enormouspotential for processing into renewable biomaterials, they havebecome the subject of increasing research around the world.Polysaccharide Building Blocks brings together all the latestdiscoveries and applications of polysaccharides, providing readerswith an up-to-date understanding of their physical, chemical, andbiological properties. Moreover, the authors discuss the inherent"tunability" of polysaccharides, explaining how and why they areideal for the development and manufacturing of new sustainablematerials.

The book begins with a fundamental overview of recent advancesin cellulosic chemistry. Next, it covers such important topicsas:

  • The ability of some polysaccharides to be processed innano-sized building blocks promoting the emergence of engineerednanomaterials based on natural polysaccharides

  • Chitin's potential in structural and functional nanocompositeapplications and biomedical applications such as bioadhesives andhemostatics

  • Emerging applications that take advantage of the electricalconductivity of polysaccharides

  • Ability of porous polysaccharides to deliver new, valuableabsorption, storage, and delivery functionalities

  • Chemical and physical properties as well as techniques andapproaches for processing starch-based bio-nanocomposites

  • Potential uses of heteropolysaccharides as biomaterials

Each chapter has been contributed by one or more leadinginternational experts in the field of renewable biomaterials. Inaddition to reviewing the current state of the science, the authorsrecommend future directions in research and conclude each chapterwith a list of references guiding readers to the primary literaturein the field.

This fundamental review of the chemistry and engineering ofrenewable poly-saccharides provides the foundation that scientistsneed to develop a broad range of renewable materials andapplications that are essential for a green economy and asustainable planet.
