This volume is designed to provide an introduction to all branches of microbiology, both pure and applied. It assumes an elementary knowledge of the principles of biology but should be suitable for students in school or universities studying biology beyond the most elementary stage. It deals with the main groups of microorganisms and, in particular, with bacteria and viruses, with the general principles of their isolation, growth, structure, physiology, genetics, classification and ecology. This is followed by a study of the main applications of microbiology in the fields of agriculture, industry and medicine.
