Synopsis

This survey attempts to help US students put events in the history of their country in a global context. The book covers the social political, economic, legal and cultural aspects of history, and aims to take into account a wide range of modern historical opinion. This edition includes material on the Gulf War. There is also expanded coverage on the counter-culture and new material on the FBI's surveillance of Luther King. An instructor's manual and test bank is available.

About the Author

Walter Lafeber was born and raised in Indiana, attended Hanover College, and then received his Master of Arts degree from Stanford University and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His books include The American Age: U.S. Foreign Policy at Home and Abroad Since 1750 (2nd ed., 1994); Inevitable Revolutions: The United States in Central America (2nd ed., 1993); The Panama Canal: The Crisis in Historical Perspective (2nd ed., 1989); and The New Empire: An Interpretation of American Expansion, 1865-1898 (1963). He also wrote The American Search for Opportunity, Volume II of the Cambridge History of American Foreign Relations (1994). Since 1968, Professor Lafeber has been the Marie Underhill Noll Professor of American History at Cornell University, and in 1994, he was named a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Teaching Fellow.

Polenberg received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. His research area is modern political and social history.

Nancy Woloch teaches history and American Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. She is the author of 'Muller vs. Oregon: A Brief History with Documents' (1996); co-author of 'The American Century: A History of the United States Since the 1890s' (1998), with Walter Lafeber and Richard Polenberg; and co-author of 'The Enduring Vision: A History of the American People' (4th ed., 2000).
