Synopsis

A complete, proven methodology for planning and setting up an open client/server environment in your organization.

The advantages of client/server systems are often lost through poor planning and budgeting. Companies have squandered millions on elaborate integration and reengineering schemes by jumping into this technology without proper planning.

This book provides a step-by-step methodology for planning open client/server systems. The planning methodology gives you the freedom to choose the best hardware and software components for your enterprise while achieving the inter-operability, portability, and scalability you need.

Numerous case studies are presented with up-to-date and relevant examples. You'll also get a wealth of helpful background information about formal and de facto standards, open system models and architectures, client/server applications, middleware, system management, and more.

Whether you're a manager, system architect, strategic planner, or software professional, Distributed Open Systems Engineering is a resource you won't want to be without.

WHAT'S ON THE CD-ROM

The Distributed Open Systems Engineering Environment (DOSEE) demonstration planning software tool on the enclosed CD incorporates many of the templates described in the book.

It also includes a subset of a client/server planning database generated by one company. You can modify or add to this database to reflect your own organization's open client/server system needs and to help plan out your system.
