Synopsis
The level of perinatal and maternal mortality and morbidity remains high (1981) despite the fact that during the last fifty years the practice of obstetrics has become a highly complex science. The number of abnormalities accompanying the supposedly physiological process of childbirth is striking, and in this work the social, environmental, and medical factors are discussed in the light of current obstetric knowledge. Beginning with a historical survey of childbirth practices, the book develops as an intriguing philosophic and scientific study of the interrelationship of childbirth, nutrition and population control.
