Synopsis

This beautifully illustrated book is the companion volume to this year's eight Audubon Television Specials on PBS and TBS. Offering an in-depth look at the fight for survival of a number of endangered species imperiled habitats, it unites image and word to create a beautiful and enduring chronicle of hope. The book combines dramatic on-the-scenes photojournalism with the exquisite nature photography that has become an Audubon hallmark. From ocean depths to arctic tundra and ancient forests, the collection of pieces here will bring readers to the major battlefields where the fight for survival is being waged by species such as wolves, sea turtles, and sharks. The role played by human beings in those battles is thoroughly explored, and shown to be no longer exclusively the concern of environmentalists but an issue of increasing importance to ordinary people around the world.

From Library Journal

This book, designed to complement eight Audubon Society television specials to air on PBS this coming summer, focuses on in-depth discussions of wolves, sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, Pacific Northwest forests, the Arctic wilderness, sandhill cranes, and the problem of poaching. (Videos of these programs will also be available for sale.) The final chapter includes suggestions on what individuals can do to promote conservation and protection of wildlife. This will be a sought-after book when the Audubon Society specials air, and deservedly so. It's interesting, entertaining, and important. Don't pass it up.

From School Library Journal

YA-- DiSilvestro chronicles the efforts to save animals and habitats on the verge of extinction. Each chapter details the natural history through a well-written text that includes discussion of the influence of humans in abetting extinction, of efforts to reverse the dwindling numbers of various species, and of the outlook for the future. Laced with beautiful pictures and interesting asides about each topic, this book has great value for the study of conservation.
