New legislation, an envigorated European community and Japanese dominance in the global marketplace have generated a host of concepts and regulations unknown to the business community a few years ago, thus creating a myriad of new terminology and often a redefining of already coined phrases. This edition features them all. It not only explains words in both general and specific terms but also compares them and refers to other similar meanings. Includes an appendix of useful tables and information.

These three dictionaries by Rutgers management professor Rosenberg are the latest entries in Wiley's "Business Dictionary" series. Each has approximately 7500 terms and includes commonly used symbols, acronyms, abbreviations, synonyms, and see and cross references. Aiming to serve both the experienced and novice, Rosenberg covers the field broadly, offering definitions that range from the most common to the most specific use. A random check against earlier editions found at least one change on every page. Many of the changes deal with either new automation realities or added definitions to currently used terms. The 1985 edition of the Dictionary of Banking , which libraries will find worth retaining, listed almost 10,000 definitions, many of which were dropped from the 1992 edition. The new edition does contain a bibliography of 205 terms that are cited in the definitions. The 1978 and 1983 editions of the Dictionary of Business and Management were favorably reviewed and sold well (see LJ 12/15/78; "Best Business Books of 1983," LJ 3/1/84. p. 440). The new edition is sufficiently revised to warrant purchasing the new edition, though libraries with John V. Terry's Dictionary for Business and Finance ( LJ 4/1/89) can pass on this. The Dictionary of Investing , formerly The Investor's Dictionary (Wiley, 1986) is very similar to Robert L. Shook's Wall Street Dictionary (Prentice-Hall, 1990). Rosenberg lists about 2000 more terms, but Wall Street Words is almost as current and similarly priced. Libraries with this book will not gain much by adding the Dictionary of Investing . In the past few years, Wiley has published about a half-dozen dictionaries on each of these topics, and these works are as good as any. Titles are updated every five to eight years, and Wiley issues them in inexpensive paperback editions as well as hardcover. Every medium-sized to larger academic library as well as larger public libraries should have a mix of recent business dictionaries, and buying these paperback editions makes such a mix possible. Other libraries needing coverage in these topics will also be well served by these titles.
